Caged  Bird

Every bird that takes flight is a soul awakening.

Following the success of last year’s student-produced dance drama, this year’s Caged Bird will take the stage at the Keystone Performance Center on June 7th and 10th at 7:00 PM. The 40-minute piece, inspired by the social issue of the generational gap, uses movement and narrative to explore the evolving relationship between adolescents and their parents.

“We cannot imagine the vistas of an expanded world, much less aspire to lives of nobility—or dedicate ourselves to noble causes. Our thoughts are shaped solely by books; our actions, mere imitations of others. Our greater sorrow lies in this: those who hold the keys to our cage never let the door open, even for a moment. At night, they scold us sternly: “You lack the ability to fly!”

And yet—the fledgling does not first learn to fly after earning a degree. It learns because it believes it can. It sees its kin soaring and knows, one day, it too will touch the sky.

The possibility of flight is absolute. Not once does doubt enter its mind to weaken its resolve.”
